An executive councillor is urging people to think twice before trying to justify Monday night's clashes in Mong Kok, saying it will encourage more violence in the future.
Cheung Chi-kong says Hong Kong will go down "a road of no return" if society doesn't put a stop to such unrest.
He added that the idea that the protesters were trying to protect unlicensed hawkers from being forced out by officials was just an excuse for the trouble.
Around 40 people have appeared in court charged with rioting after the disturbances left more than 100 injured.
