A localist leader is wanted by the police on suspicion of inciting violent clashes in Mong Kok on Monday.
Apple Daily is reporting that Ray Wong, convenor of localist group Hong Kong Indigenous, is the subject of an investigation by the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau.
Since the incident, Wong had not been heard from until Thursday when he released a Facebook recording in which he said he is “not sure” what would happen to him and that it might be his “final message”.
Wong’s localist colleagues said on the group’s Facebook page that officers surrounded his home in Tseung Kwan O on Thursday intending to arrest him.
But an Apple Daily reporter who went to Wong’s residence said he saw no police officers.
In the recording, Wong described himself as a “young person born and raised locally” and that he “loves and treasures” Hong Kong.
“I see that Hong Kong – which should belong to Hong Kong people – has changed beyond recognition,” he said.
He said he had joined protests in the past but was disappointed as they have all failed.
Wong said the pro-democracy protests in 2014 changed his mind after he saw Hong Kong people stand up to the police.
“In 2016 we will face harsher problems, more issues that we need to protest against in the streets,” he said.
“But I hope Hong Kong people can persevere and believe that their power can bring change, and Hong Kong can change.”
Wong ended his message by quoting a Chinese proverb: “Better to die with honor than live in disgrace.”
Hong Kong Indigenous was founded in January last year and has about 30 members.
The group was involved in anti-parallel trading protests in Yuen Long and Sheung Shui last year.
