A man has been arrested in eastern China for allegedly damaging two automatic teller machines with a can of soft drink after failing to withdraw cash using his bank card, local media reports.
The man, surnamed Zhang, was detained on Friday after spraying the can’s contents into the ATMs’ card acceptors, cash dispensers and receipt printers in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, the Nanjing Morning Post reported on Sunday.
CCTV footage showed Zhang waited until other customers had left before carrying out the attack on the night of January 16 , which burnt the circuit boards in the ATM that he attacked plus another one connected to it nearby, causing 49,000 yuan (HK$58,000) in damage.
Zhang was reported to have confessed to police that he destroyed the machine on purpose after he couldn’t withdraw cash from his bank account that was empty.
The operator of the broken cash machines, Huaxia Bank, called police, who put Zhang on a list of fugitives.
The suspect fled Nanjing after the incident and even his family lost contact with him.
Police found him more than two months later Nanchang, Jiangxi province, nearly 500km away.
He faces charges of deliberately damaging public property and told the newspaper that he regretted his actions expected to go to jail for his actions.
