The Secretary for Justice, Rimsky Yuen, said while it's a good thing for people to study Hong Kong's future, he doesn't see a need to change the One Country, Two Systems principle.

He was responding to questions related to an article from the University of Hong Kong student publication, Undergrad, which said Hong Kong should become an independent state in 2047, when the Basic Law is meant to expire.

Yuen said he believed more time should instead be spent on improving the principle, as he thinks that is more in line with the fight for democracy and the overall interest of Hong Kong.

He said the territory doesn't have the conditions to become independent.

In Beijing, the head of the National People's Congress law committee, Qiao Xiaoyang, brusquely brushed off questions about the HKU magazine's article.

"How could they?," he retorted when reporters raised the question in Beijing.

Qiao, who used to head Beijing's Basic Law Committee, was speaking on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the NPC annual meeting.
