The government’s Constitutional Development Task Force will be meeting with five representatives from the Hong Kong Federation of Students this evening in Wong Chuk Hang on the south side of the island.
The Task Force is comprised of chief secretary Carrie Lam, secretary for justice Rimsky Yuen, secretary for constitutional and mainland affairs Raymond Tam, the under-secretary for constitutional and mainland affairs Lau Kong-wah, and Edward Yau, the director of the chief executive’s office.
The meeting will be moderated by Professor Leonard Cheng, the convenor of the heads of universities committee and also the president of Lingnan University.
The Standard reports that students at Lingnan University threatened to strike when Cheng was appointed president due to his alleged links to chief executive CY Leung. They also criticized him for backing the government’s 2012 proposal of mandatory Chinese civic education, which was scrapped after public pressure.
The meeting is expected to last around two hours from 6pm and will not be open to the public, although there will be a live broadcast.
