Peter Gabriel, Pussy Riot show support for HK protesters

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters have received messages of support from some international music artists and other celebrities following last week’s police street clearance action in Mong Kok.

Peter Gabriel, former lead vocalist of the English rock band Genesis; and Pussy Riot, the all-female Russian punk band, are among those that have stood up in solidarity with the student activists.

Under a Stand By You 2.0 campaign, the performers had their photographs taken holding aloft umbrellas, in a symbolic show of support for the Occupy movement.

The photographs were being beamed on an outdoor screen in Admiralty district, adding to the messages of support at the Lennon Wall, the center of the Occupy Movement.

In one photo, Peter Gabriel stands under a yellow umbrella, a symbol of the two-month protests, with the caption “Water gets everywhere — like the will of the people.”

Another photo showed Pussy Riot members standing under umbrellas with masks on. Their message read: “Solidarity. Shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand.”

The campaign was organized by New York-based human rights group The Voice Project to show international backing for the pro-democracy protests.

Hunter Heaney, Voice Project’s founder, said the purpose was to let the protesters know that many people around the world admire what the activists are doing, and to tell them that they are not alone.
