Campaign to unite HK seen as PR stunt

The government will open all of its museums to the public for free and facilitate free entry to entertainment parks for thousands of people as a part of its campaign to make the public appreciate the beauty of Hong Kong and encourage people to do more for society.
Launching the ‘Appreciate Hong Kong' campaign, the Chief Secretary, Carrie Lam, said it was aimed at bridging divisions in the society that appeared following the Occupy protests and the rejection of the political reform package.
Lam said a lot of people have lost hope in Hong Kong and it was time for everyone to appreciate the city and contribute to its development
Under the campaign, all museums run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will be open for free in January. About 10,000 people from low-income families will be allowed to visit Ocean Park for free while Hong Kong Disneyland will donate 13,000 tickets for students with special education needs as well as their parents and teachers.
The Hong Kong Police College, as well as the Fire and Ambulance Services Academy will also organize open days for the public.
However, academics were skeptical over whether the "Appreciate Hong Kong" campaign will yield any positive results. The director of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Social Policy Research Centre, Chung Kim-wah, said the initiative was only a public relations stunt, and will do very little to improve public sentiment.—RTHK
