Days after the 0-0 draw, Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah said he was proud of the Hong Kong football team’s excellent performance on Friday in a politically-charged World Cup qualifier against China.
He did not reply when asked whether Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying should also have expressed support for the local team.
Separately, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said she supported the Hong Kong team in playing “a wonderful game”.

The match on Tuesday caused the city’s top government officials to come under fire for refusing to show outright support for a home side win.
But Tsang, who months ago was pictured cheering for the Hong Kong side in another World Cup qualifier, posted a photo of himself watching the match on a tablet computer in the Romanian capital Bucharest. The caption read: “Exciting match!”
During the same set of remarks, Tsang was asked about the city’s property market. He believed that, given the prospect of rising interest rates and the present global economic situation, local property prices would be affected.
