An official from Beijing's Liaison Office in Hong Kong said on Friday that it would be difficult for victims of the recent telephone scams to recover their money as some of the funds were transferred to Taiwan.
Earlier this month, a joint operation between mainland, Hong Kong and overseas authorities netted more than 250 mainlanders suspected of posing as officials and conning victims.
Wu Guozhen from the police liaison branch said eight cases involved local people who were swindled out of millions of dollars. He said the mainland and Taiwan had no agreement on dealing with stolen goods so it would be difficult for victims to get their money back.
