Democratic Party lawmaker Helena Wong has called on Lingnan University to suspend the duties of council member Alex Lee, after a school he runs was accused of altering records to fast track some doctorate programmes.

She also called on the Education Bureau to launch a formal investigation into the allegation.

Lee is the chairman and principal of Lifelong College, which offers doctorate programmes in partnership with overseas universities. The Apple Daily newspaper reported that the college backdated some students' admission records, so that they could obtain an overseas doctorate within a year – instead of the normal course of three to four years.

A staff member of Lifelong College – who gave her surname as Ng and said she's the operation director of the school – told RTHK that the college is conducting an internal probe.

She added she didn't think the allegation holds water because everything was documented. Ng said the college will issue a press release after its investigation.

But Wong, who is a member of Legco's education panel, said the bureau should conduct a probe and Lee should be suspended from his duties as a council member of Lingnan University until the matter is cleared up.

The lawmaker also urged the bureau to step up its supervision of similar partnership programmes.
