Over 90 per cent of staff at eight tertiary institutions have voted in favour of abolishing the power of the Chief Executive to appoint members to university governing councils. More than 4,000 staff took part in the vote.
It was organised following growing concerns over academic autonomy. This came about after a pro-democracy academic at the University of Hong Kong, Johannes Chan, failed to get a senior HKU management post in 2015. He had been approved as the sole candidate but was voted down by the council.
Ninety-five per cent of those who voted also supported increasing the ratio of elected members of staff, and students, on the councils.
