The Consumer Council is urging fast-food chains to phase out sourcing and serving produce from animals which are routinely given antibiotics.

The watchdog said it has called on nine global and local fast-food chains that are running a total of over 800 stores in Hong Kong to adopt transparent procurement policies and make sure the food they serve is free from excessive use of antibiotics.

This comes as medical experts world over have raised alarm over the rise of bugs that resist even the powerful antibiotics. Activists and some experts blame massive use of antibiotics in animal husbandry contributing to this.

Consumer Council's vice-chairman Philip Leung warned that if the overuse of antibiotics in farms continues, it may lead to a state of disaster when even common bacteria will be resistant to normal antibiotics.

The council marked the World Consumer Rights Day on Tuesday.
