The Chief Executive CY Leung said that it's "common sense" that Hong Kong will continue to be part of China after 2047 – when the Basic Law guaranteeing the way of life in the Special Administrative Region is to expire.

Leung was commenting about the the latest edition of the University of Hong Kong student publication, the Undergrad, which included an article advocating Hong Kong to become an independent sovereign state recognised by the United Nations.

Leung said in response that he believes the public also think that the capitalist system and way of life in Hong Kong as guaranteed by the Basic Law should not and need not change after 2047.

He said it is clearly stipulated in the preamble of the Basic Law that Hong Kong is part of China since ancient times, and such fact will not change. The Chief Executive added this is a constitutional matter clearly set out in the Basic Law.

Leung was speaking ahead of the weekly Executive Council meeting on Tuesday.

Calls for Hong Kong independence or other ways to ensure the city's high degree of autonomy have gathered steam ever since the pro-democracy Occupy Movement in 2014.
