Marcus Lau talks to RTHK's Janice Wong

The editor of the University of Hong Kong student magazine has disputed the assertion by Chief Executive CY Leung that Hong Kong is, and will continue to be a part of China.

Marcus Lau said Hong Kong was founded in 1841 and PRC in 1949. So the Chief Executive’s claim that Hong Kong was always a part of China does not hold.

The magazine, Undergrad, had called for the territory's independence in its latest issue.

Lau said the current administration under Leung has shown the One Country Two Systems principle is not enough to protect Hong Kong people, citing the case of the missing booksellers as an example.

“Many of these lead the students to think that maybe it is time to look for a new path”, Lau said. He said he also believes more and more young people here will eventually feel the same way.

He said the article, to which he and 12 other students contributed, is not speaking for all students of the HKU, but is a representative view as they were endorsed by the students to reflect their view.

Lau told RTHK’s Janice Wong that it should be up to Hong Kong people to decide what their future should be.
