Latest | FOCUS TAIWAN - CNA ENGLISH NEWSToday, 18:16

Taipei, March 16 (CNA) President-elect Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Wednesday that she hopes to communicate with Japan soon on issues related to Taiwan's bid to join the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade bloc and establish a free trade agreement with Japan.

Tsai made the remarks when she received Mitsuo Obashi, head of the Japan Interchange Association, during which the two sides exchanged views on issues related to bilateral free trade agreements and tourism.

The DPP said in a news release after the meeting that Tsai expressed to Obashi that she would like to start the communications early so as to speed up bilateral trade cooperation and give more space for the development of industry on both sides.

On the issue of tourism, Tsai noted that the number of Taiwanese visiting Japan has increased every year, and she expressed hope that the promotion of Taiwan's cities and counties will help boost the exchange of visits further.
