Civic Party vice-chairwoman Tanya Chan says it's time for people - especially the younger generation - to think about what they want for Hong Kong in 30 years.
The Chief Executive, CY Leung, has said it's "common sense" that Hong Kong will remain part of China after 2047 - when it loses its semi-autonomous status.
However, Chan said her party had lost faith in the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. She said it had become obvious that the central and SAR governments were not respecting the principle.
In its latest issue, the University of Hong Kong's student magazine “Undergrad” had called for the territory's independence and suggested it be declared a sovereign state by the United Nation. However, barrister and DAB legislator Lawrence Ma says it is "legally impossible" for Hong Kong to seek independence from China, no matter how many people would want it in future.
Speaking at RTHK's City Forum, former “Undergrad” editor Marcus Lau asked Ma whether he would respect public opinion if over half of the people of Hong Kong said they want to separate from China in 2047. Mr Ma said such request would easily be rejected by the United Nations Security Council.
