The Education Sector lawmaker, Ip Kin-yuen, says teachers and students are "gasping for air" due to their heavy workload.

Speaking on RTHK's "Letter to Hong Kong" programme, Mr Ip said the government should allow more "breathing space" in the education system in the wake of recent spate of student suicides.

He said numerous measures introduced since the education reform have made teachers and students extremely busy. He said teachers had told him that self-evaluations and external school reviews pursued by the Education Bureau had put more pressure on them, together with class and school reductions.

He added that with stressed teachers worrying about job security and other distractions, it is difficult for them to find the time to provide extra counseling support for pupils.
