The lawmaker representing the education sector in the Legislative Council, Ip Kin-yuen, on Friday urged the Chief Executive, CY Leung, not to delay the appointment of a new chairman for the governing body of the University of Hong Kong.

Ip, who is also the convenor of the HKU Alumni Concern Group, said Leung's failure to name someone since the former chairman's term ended last Friday was a real problem for the university as it hindered its operation.

It is believed Leung wants to appoint former education secretary, Arthur Li, but has delayed the announcement following public opposition. It also follows criticism of political interference in the governing body, the University of Hong Kong Council, after former law dean and pro-democracy scholar, Johannes Chan, was denied the post of pro-vice-chancellor of the university.

Another council member, legislator Abraham Shek, was earlier named the "spokesperson" of the council until an official chairman is appointed.
