A Shenzhen woman was arrested for trying to use her daughters to smuggle 80 Apple iPhones into mainland China, Sing Tao Daily reported Thursday.
After she picked up her daughters from a school in Hong Kong on Sunday, the woman and the two girls, around five or six years old and in Hong Kong school uniforms, approached the border checkpoint on Chung Ying Street in Sha Tau Kok.
One end of the street is in Hong Kong, and the other is within mainland China.
Mainland customs officials at the checkpoint noticed that the woman seemed nervous.
She walked even faster as she went through the checkpoint, which is behavior commonly exhibited by smugglers, the officials said.
Fifteen iPhone 6s Plus handsets were found strapped onto the woman’s body, and 65 others were found on the girls.
The smartphones were estimated to be worth a total of HK$610,000 (US$78,700).
Because of the retail price difference between Apple products sold in Hong Kong and in the mainland, where they are subject to tax, smugglers can profit from reselling iPhones spirited into the mainland.
