Double-digit rise in corruption complaints last year

The anti-graft agency, Independent Commission Against Corruption, announced today, it received 2,798 corruption complaints from the public last year, representing an increase of 18 percent compared with 2,363 in 2014.
Complaints that could be investigated increased by 25 percent from 1,561 to 1,950.
Of those corruption complaints, 65 percent, or 1,831 concerned the private sector, 28 percent, or 767 were against government departments, and 7 percent, or 200, involved public bodies, a pattern consistent with that of recent years, the Advisory Committee on Corruption, Chairman, Chow Chung-kong announced today.
He said the increase in graft reports should not be interpreted in a pejorative sense. Rather, it could be attributed to the ICAC's continuous publicity campaign in the past year to encourage the public to report corruption.
The number of people convicted increased by 24 per cent from 172 to 213.—The Standard
