The Chief Executive, CY Leung, said on Monday that Hong Kong police will continue to follow up on cases of the missing Causeway Bay booksellers, but added they had received no reports regarding Gui Minhai who appeared on China Central Television on Sunday night.
Gui was seen weeping in an interview with the station. He claimed he had turned himself in after feeling guilty for escaping a suspended prison term years ago. In the footage, Gui – a mainland-born Swedish national – also asked the Swedish government to stay away from "his own problems".
Gui vanished from Thailand in October last year.
Leung said the police will see if any information from Gui's case can help in the investigation of another bookseller, Lee Bo, who went missing for more than two weeks after last seen in Hong Kong.
He also said the mainland authorities have yet to respond to the police’s inquiry on Lee.
There is widespread speculation that Lee was abducted to the mainland by its security agents as the book store he ran in Causeway Bay sold titles critical of mainland leaders.
