The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, Peter Mathieson, on Friday ruled out penalising students if they take part in a class boycott to protest against the appointment of Executive Councillor and former education secretary, Arthur Li, as the head of the institution's governing body.

A group of students had earlier formed a committee to discuss the issue on Sunday. Its members include a former president of the Hong Kong University Students’ Union Yvonne Leung, a former leader of the Federation of Students Alex Chow, and activist Edward Leung from the localist group Hong Kong Indigenous.

Mathieson said the students are entitled to their actions – as long as they are lawful.

"I would take the same attitude that I did to the previous class boycott in 2014, which is that students are entitled to express their views in whichever ways they choose – as long as they're within the law and they respect safety and different opinions", he said.
