An interview broadcast on CCTV showing Gui Minhai saying he had returned to China on his own will has raised a lot of sceptical comments on the social media forums on the mainland and here.
The report shown on state television on Sunday night said Gui had knocked down a young woman in a car accident in 2003. In an interview, Gui said he felt guilty after running away from a suspended prison term and decided to surrender himself.
Gui had gone missing while on holiday in Thailand in October.
Many commented on the discrepancies in the footage, like the colour change of his T-shirt and dishevelled hair. The report said the interview took place at a detention centre, but did not give details.
Official documents shown in the footage showed that Gui was born in 1964, which means he was 39 at the time of the accident. But another page of the document showed that the driver was 46-years-old.
One of the Chinese characters of his name shown in the documents was also different from the one commonly used by Hong Kong media, although both share the same pinyin.
Internet users on the mainland were apparently not convinced by the CCTV report.
One said in an online forum that “the screenwriter is a bad one”.
Another said that “I’ve heard people smuggling to commit a crime, I’ve never seen people smuggling to surrender themselves.”
The forum was later closed.
Media sites in Hong Kong also attracted a lot of comments from readers who questioned the report.
