The Airport Authority's Chief Executive Officer, Fred Lam, says Hong Kong International Airport will soon reach maximum capacity and a third runway is needed to meet future air traffic demand.
Lam made the comment after the airport announced it had handled over 406,000 flight movements last year, a record and an increase of 3.8 percent when compared to 2014.
However, plans to expand the airport are mired in legal challenges. Opponents are also sceptical about whether the government can coordinate the control of regional airspace with mainland authorities.
