Taking a Food Walk in Mongkok
Hong Kong is a bustling and vibrant city, and its colorful and lively streets are probably one of the mostvisited places here in Asia. Aside from Hong Kong’s picturesque skyscrapers, lively theme parks and countless places to shop from, Hong Kong’s food is what makes us love this city. Hong Kong is just a tinycity compared to the other colossal tourist destinations around the world, but never underestimate Hong Kong’s culture and love for food, because this little heaven is one of the cities with the highest number of restaurants around the world!
Food Walk in Mongkok
We had our spoon, forks, chopsticks, and cameras ready as me and my travel buddies conquered FoodWalk in Mongkok, courtesy of AirAsia and Vikings Luxury Buffet in relation to their “Dine and Fly”promotions. We experienced an almost three-hour-long food tour of Mongkok, which was more than just a food appreciation—it was also a cultural immersion, as we all rediscovered Hong Kong in a fulfilling gastronomical stroll in the busy streets of Mongkok.

Our first stop for our Food Walk in Mongkok was at Sham Tseng Chan Kee Roast Goose Restaurant, a famous food joint in Hong Kong for making the best-tasting roast goose. I admit that I have never been a huge fan of goose dishes, but after trying their tasty and juicy golden brown roast goose, I immediately became a fanatical convert.
Hung Fai Cake Shop

Fruits and Vegetable Market in Mongkok
We shed of some of the heavy goose meal we had from the first destination and walked around Mongkok to find this cake shop located in Fuk Wa Street. Hung Fai Cake Shop is not your typical, classy-type cake shop where you can sit down for hours with bottomless coffee and a guilty slice of sweet chocolate cake. Hung Fai is a takeaway bakery where you can buy freshly-baked goodies to-go.

After showing us the bakery, our tour guide bought us a freshly-baked egg tart. The fresh-from-the-oven treat and its warm, flaky and crunchy crust perfectly complemented the not-so-sweet custard filling. It’s probably one of the best tarts I have ever tasted, second to the one I have tried in Macau.

We reached Yan Wo Tofu Factory after walking paststall after stall of fresh produce, deep-fried street food, spices, and several varieties of egg.

Yan Wo Tofu Factory has few tables and chairs to accommodate people who want to grab a serving of their famous bean curd pudding. Their Soya bean curd pudding is served beautifully without any sweetener, but they also offer unrefined sugar as a condiment.

Our light meal of soya bean curd pudding was followed by another walk along the lively streets of Mongkok. This time, we passed by the fish market, where crabs, live and frozen fish, and shell fishes, were put on display. Right at the corner was a shop that sells Chinese herbal tea, which also happened to be our next destination.

We took a sip of their black colored tea. Its bitterness reminded me a bit of Lipton black tea, but it was more soothing as it had medicinal properties. Our tour guide also explained to us that the herbal tea can cure ailments and flush away harmful toxins in one’s body.
Sher Wong Yip Snake Shop
After the teashop, we proceeded to the most challenging part of our food trip—eating a hot bowl of snake soup! Some of my travel buddies were hesitant at first, so I took a brave step forward, summoned my inner Andrew Zimmern side, and grabbed a small bowl. The snake meat, to my surprise, tasted a lot like chicken! The meat was chewy, which is probably why they served it in shredded, tiny bits.

Tasting my very first snake soup was a whole new experience for a foodie like me, and definitely immersed me even deeper into the Chinese food culture!

It didn’t excite me when I learned that our next destination was at a Dim Sum shop, because I alreadyvisited a lot of Dim Sum places in my hometown Manila. But everything changed when I saw them serving the food, which were similar to the ones I see in Manila but were very much more interesting. Their dim sum spread, their eggplant dish with tasty meat as topping, and their deep-fried dumplings with wasabi filling was twisted and over the top. Hong Kong is really a food haven!

You can tell a food stall sells good food if it is flocked by people. That’s how we spotted this fishball stallalong Tung Choi Street. Locals, tourists including our group, lined up for their hot-off-the-pan fishballs. They’re tasty, and best of all, cheap!

We headed next to Kee Tsui Cake Shop to try out some of their famous red bean pastry. It is undeniably the favorite shop of the locals. The crowd we saw when we arrived was already enough proof!

Our tour guide bought us a glutinous rice cake with red bean paste filling. The appearance reminded me of hopia (moon cake) because of the filling, but it tasted more like Chinese tikoy for me. Was it good? I’m actually craving for one now!

Our last stop at Mongkok was for dessert—ice cream! The newly-established shop offers various types of pudding, eggettes, and ice cream. Their coconut pandan ice cream was to die for! It was the perfect dessert for every meal that I had that day.
