The High Court has rejected activist Joshua Wong's application for a judicial review on the age restriction for election candidates.

The secretary-general of the new Demosisto Party was seeking to bring the age threshold for candidates down from 21 to 18 – the same age when people can vote.

But the judge said the limitation is reasonable, and that it aims at ensuring a degree of maturity for a candidate. He added that the courts should not decide on matters that should be determined by the legislature.

Wong said he disagrees, and will consider whether to appeal the decision.

“In the future, I still hope the legislators will push forward to reduce the age limit from 21 to 18 to let Hong Kong people have the equal right to vote and also run in the elections,” he said.
