The University of Hong Kong's alumni office has called for donations to support the family of the fireman who died in a blaze in Kowloon Bay on Tuesday.

Thirty-year-old Thomas Cheung graduated from the university in 2008. He’s survived by his wife and a four-month-old son.

“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our dear alumnus Thomas Cheung who fought bravely in the fire,” the school said on its Facebook page.

The director of Fire Services, Lai Man-hin, said he and his colleagues are deeply saddened by the death of Senior Station Officer Cheung.

The chairman of Hong Kong Fire Services Department Staffs General Association Nip Yuen-fung described Cheung as a hero. He said the association would contact his family to know more about what they need and provide assistance.

The fire broke out at an industrial building at about 11am on Tuesday. Cheung lost contact with his colleagues at the scene and was unconscious when he was rescued.
