Pan-democratic lawmakers have accused former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa of failing to grasp why young people are advocating independence for Hong Kong.

Tung had earlier called on pro-establishment parties to work more closely with the administration to prevent people from seeking independence for the city.

Democratic Party chairwoman Emily Lau said the reason why groups were calling for independence is because they don’t believe the One Country, Two Systems principle is working.

She said these groups believe the principle is being dismantled by policies of the government here and in Beijing, and the only option left to them is to fight for independence.

“The only way to resolve the problem is to show them that One Country, Two Systems can work, Hong Kong can enjoy a high degree of autonomy,” she said.

People Power lawmaker Albert Chan said Tung doesn’t understand the main problem with governance in the city.

“In order for the government to lead properly, the administration has to decide policies based on public need – not on personal financial gain,” he said. “One of CY Leung’s major problems, or previous administration’s problems, is there are so many vested interests; people dictating [the] policy decision making process.”
