Civic Passion member Cheng Chung-tai, a potential Legco election candidate in New Territories West, explained why he supported Hong Kong independence in a historic open debate on Hong Kong secession co-hosted byHarbour Times and Island School on 20 June. He argued that the only way to protect the unique language and culture of Hong Kong is to take back the rights of defining identity.

In a media interview, Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing suggested raising profits tax to finance education and healthcare investments. Li disagrees with the idea of a “wealth tax” because he thinks it would be unfair to enterprises and the wealthy. Li also believes Hong Kong is facing its most difficult time of the past two decades and that the government should give more opportunities to the young.

League of Social Democrats Legco member “Long Hair” Leung Kwok-hung is in hot water for receiving a HK$250,000 political donation from Next Media founder Jimmy Lai Chee-ying (黎智英) without notifying Legco. Leung has been charged with one count of misconduct in public office, according to a statement from the Independent Commission Against Corruption. He denied the charge in the Eastern Court on 23 June and said somebody wanted to disrupt his campaign.
