Legislative Council president Jasper Tsang Yok-sing hit out at some “incredibly stupid” government officials for spreading false rumours which suggested it was the unsatisfactory performance of the two removed ministers, including his brother, that prompted their sudden departure.
It was the third time in a week for the pro-establishment heavyweight to speak out for his younger brother, former Secretary for Home Affairs Tsang Tak-sing, after he resigned alongside civil services chief Paul Tang Kwok-wai in an unexpected government shake-up.
Online media Speak Out Hong Kong, widely regarded as a propaganda of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, quoted “authoritative sources” saying the younger Tsang did not “jump ship” shortly after the shake-up emerged last Tuesday.
Instead, the report suggested the leftist-turned-minister was sacked as both Leung and Beijing were not happy with his performance on the city’s youth work, a factor they thought led to last year’s Occupy protests.
Jasper Tsang said some "stupid" people in the administration had spread rumours about the two ministers' poor performance in an attempt to stop others from thinking that Leung was deserted by his cabinet members.
“I have heard that some staff members in the government have found that very chilling,” he told Commercial Radio this morning.
The reshuffle could have been handled better and he found it a pity that it had ended up that way, the elder Tsang added.
He refused to comment on whether the stupid people he referred to included Andrew Fung Wai-kwong, the government information coordinator, but said he could not stop stupid people from doing silly thing.
