A Cathay Pacific flight that left Hong Kong for Los Angeles was forced to make an emergency landing yesterday in Alaska after smoke was detected in the cabin.
All 294 people on board are safe, reports RTHK, and the landing went smoothly.
The plane was diverted to an American military airport in the middle of nowhere, specifically one of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska – 2,300 kilometres west of the state’s biggest city, Anchorage.
Actually, Shemya, the icy island that they landed on, is closer to Russia than anywhere else. Sounds like an adventure to us!
The passengers were then transferred to Anchorage, where they continued their journey on another plane to their slightly warmer and less snowy intended destination.
The original aircraft was inspected and deemed safe to fly on again.
