Hong Kong tourist ‘charged HKD1,280’ for taxi from airport to Sai Wan during T8

With alternate taxi services such as Uber and GoGoVan competing against Hong Kong’s traditional red cabs, it seems some are finding it increasingly difficult to support tradition, especially when they hear stories of people getting royally ripped off.

According to Professional Teachers Union director-general Fung Ka Keung, a friend of his who came to Hong Kong two weeks ago during the Typhoon Signal 8 was charged HKD1,280 for a ride from the airport to Sai Wan.

Fung claims that the driver didn’t notify his friend about the added cost, and that his poor buddy ended up haggling for his life as he didn’t have enough money.

The final fare came out at HKD750 for a ride that is estimated to cost around HKD315.

Fung aknowledged the risks a driver faces while working during a T8, but said he thinks adding HKD100-200 to a fare is reasonable.

However, he said this should be clarified before the customer gets in so drivers can’t get away with charging such “ridiculous” prices.
