An escalator at Hong Kong’s Times Square shopping centre dramatically broke down yesterday – less than a week after a woman was killed in an escalator accident in mainland China – sending social media into a frenzy.

At around 6am yesterday a Facebook user posted a photo of one of the main escalators at Times Square in Causeway Bay, with one of the metal steps jutting out of the machinery with broken yellow pieces scattered around it.

The photo was quickly shared across social media, attracting hundreds of shares and comments, including people expressing their concern at the image.

The incident came less than a week after a woman in central Hubei province was killed when she fell through a broken floorplate on an escalator and into the machinery below.

Since then, videos have circulated online of Chinese people jumping over floorplates and carefully probing the ground as they exit escalators on the mainland and in Hong Kong.

Times Square has been contacted for comment about the escalator malfunction.
