Water victims alliance wants pipes changed, probe widened
An alliance of public housing residents is pressing the government to replace pipes in their estates amid a lead contamination scandal.
About 200 members of the Drinking Water Victims Alliance petitioned the Chief Executive’s Office on Sunday to demand immediate action.
Also, they want a thorough investigation into the contamination and a follow up on the health condition of affected residents, according to Apple Daily.
The members are from Kai Ching Estate in Kowloon City, Kwai Luen Estate in Kwai Chung, Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate, Shui Chuen O Estate in Sha Tin and Wing Cheong estate in Sham Shui Po.
Convenor Andrew Wan, who is also Democratic Party vice chairman, expects the affected residents to demand compensation.
Secretary for Food and Health Ko Wing-man said portable blood testing instruments will be available for public use.
Also, Queen Elizabeth Hospital will soon offer blood tests.
Blood samples could be sent overseas for further evaluation, he said.
The Health Department has received 3,000 public inquiries, of which about two-thirds were about blood test appointments.
