The University of Hong Kong Alumni Concern Group has condemned the decision by the institution’s governing body not to appoint former law dean Johannes Chan as a pro-vice-chancellor.
HKU council chairman Leong Che-hung said members rejected Chan over "the long-term and best interests" of the university, but he didn't elaborate.
Chan was the sole candidate and his supporters said the council’s refusal to appoint him was down to his links with pro-democracy groups.
The concern group's deputy convenor, Mak Tung-wing, said they were outraged by the decision and in particular by Leong saying no reason will be given for rejecting Chan.
Mak also praised the president of the university's student union, Billy Fung, who broke confidentiality rules by revealing that former education secretary Arthur Li argued strongly against giving Chan the job.
