Church leader defends criticism of government

A Christian leader has defended his criticism of the government, saying it’s important for religious groups to speak out regardless of whether it can engender real change.

In a speech on Tuesday at a ceremony to mark the upcoming National Day on October 1, Reverend Yuen Tin-yau said public opposition will not abate unless governance improves, and lies and verbal trickery are eliminated.

Yuen, who chairs the Hong Kong Christian Council, had also said the next chief executive shouldn’t be afraid to reflect what Hong Kong people think to the central government, and work to unite people rather than divide them. He also criticised Beijing for repressing Christians in the mainland.

Top officials including Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, Home Secretary Lau Kong-wah and a Deputy Director of Beijing’s Liaison Office, Yin Xiaoping, were in the audience.

But speaking on a radio programme on Friday, Yuen gave no apologies for his remarks, and said he has felt no “pressure” as a result. He said he hopes the Christian church can become a bridge between the government and people with different opinions.
