Environmental group Green Sense has slammed the Airport Authority over its move to slap a new levy on passengers from next year to fund the controversial third runway.
The group said it is not sensible to start charging passenger levies from the middle of 2016 as the authority announced, when several judicial review cases related to the runway will be heard only by next July.
The group's president, Roy Tam, described the construction as a "white elephant project", and said it simply does not make sense to make passengers bear the cost.
The controversial project comes with a price tag of over HK$140 billion. The government has said it will not utilise taxpayers' money in the project.
The Airport Authority says it needs the third runway to maintain Hong Kong's status as the regional aviation hub.
