Young people are more pessimistic about Hong Kong’s prospects, according to a survey by Lingnan University.
Local group Future @ Hong Kong, formerly Concern Group for Public Opinion on Constitutional Development, interviewed 1,030 residents 18 years old and above from Sept. 7 to Sept. 13.
The respondents were asked to rate Hong Kong on a number of factors on a scale of zero to 10.
They were most optimistic about family finances with a 5.56 rating.
Efforts to narrow the wealth gap got 3.56 and government performance received 3.98 while moves to reduce social rift came in at 3.66.
Respondents between 18 and 29 were more pessimistic than those above 50, especially on political issues.
Convenor Fred Li said there has been no improvement in perceptions across all age groups regarding political issues.
He said the government needs more effort to win public trust.
Centaline Property co-founder Shih Wing-ching, a member of the concern group, said it is worrying that Hong Kong’s social development has fallen short of young people’s expectations.
As a result, they could resort to protests and other means to express their discontent, he said
