A heart attack may be the reason behind the death of a mainland tourist less than 24 hours after his alleged beating in Hung Hom on Monday, the South China Morning Post has learned based on the results of his autopsy.
Investigators were running further tests on Miao Chunqi, 54.
“We have to wait for the results of a toxicology examination to conclude the cause of his death,” a source with knowledge of the case said yesterday.
Authorities arrived at the initial finding of a heart attack after a postmortem examination was conducted on Miao’s body at a public mortuary in the morning.
Miao died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei on Tuesday, a day after the alleged incident at a jeweller’s in which he tried to mediate in a shopping dispute, was dragged out of the store and beaten unconscious by a group of men.
On Thursday, a mainland tour escort and a Hong Kong tour guide did not enter a plea to a joint charge of manslaughter at Kowloon City Court. The case was adjourned to December 22.
The source said police would seek legal advice from the Department of Justice on whether to amend the charge.
Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into the local travel agency that hosted Miao and his tour group from Shenzhen.
