The lawmaker who represents the IT sector in the Legislative Council, Charles Mok, says the lack of professionals with computer coding skills is hindering innovation and technology development in Hong Kong, describing it as the city's "most critical bottleneck".

Speaking on RTHK's Letter to Hong Kong, Mok said the problem lies in an outdated and disjointed education system. He called on the government to make coding a mandatory subject in schools.

"Within 10 years, coding must be put into the curriculum of all schools. I believe it should even be mandatory up to the junior secondary school level," he said. "As an interim measure before we get to that point, subsidies should be made available to needy families so that private coding classes can be accessible to their children as well."
