An Eastern Court magistrate will rule on November 20 whether to terminate legal proceedings against four activists, including student leaders Joshua Wong and Nathan Law, on charges arising out of a protest in June last year.

The four defendants are charged with obstructing police during a demonstration outside Beijing's Liaison Office in Western, where protesters burned copies of the State Council's White Paper on One Country, Two Systems.

People Power lawmaker, Albert Chan, and League of Social Democrats vice-chairman, Raphael Wong, are also charged with the same offence with Wong, the convenor of the student group Scholarism, and Law, the leader of the Federation of Students.

All of them have denied the charges.

The defence questioned why it took prosecutors 13 months to file charges in such a simple case. But the prosecution opposed the stay application.

The defendants had accused the Department of Justice of having political motives in prosecuting them.
