The Financial Secretary, John Tsang, has cited Kung Fu legend Bruce Lee as an inspiration for his flexible and accomodating approach.
In summing up the core martial arts philosophy decades ago, Lee said "Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless, like water. It can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend."
In his latest blog entry, Tsang said his personal approach to work, life, and interpersonal relationships involved being like water, explaining that taking a more flexible, accomodating approach can help dissipate opposing forces, and can even redirect the force to your advantage.
Tsang's latest blog entry comes a week after he suggested that localism can be a positive and constructive force for Hong Kong.
It further highlights the philosophical differences between Tsang and Chief Executive CY Leung, who has often been criticised for being overly confrontational.
Tsang -- one of the most popular officials in Hong Kong and rumoured to be a dark horse candidate as the city's next leader -- also said had he not returned to Hong Kong from the United States in the 1980's, he may have opened a martial arts school in the US, and be enjoying a happy life there.
