Activists advocating Hong Kong's independence joined the thousands of people who marched to Beijing's Liaison Office in Western, to protest against the disappearance of five men linked to a Causeway Bay bookstore that sold material critical of mainland leaders. But they were surrounded by a large number of police officers throughout the procession.
On reaching close to the Liaison Office, police separated them from the other demonstrators for about 30 minutes whilst other marchers passed by. One of the activists, who preferred not to be named, accused the police of unlawful detention and suppressing their right to free expression.
"It's totally unfair and totally ridiculous because the other parties can move through", she said. "We've been staying here for about half an hour".
The unnamed activist also said some people, including elderly protesters, were unwell and couldn't breathe properly.
