The the law school at the University of Hong Kong said on Thursday that it is surprised that the Law Society of Hong Kong has decided to push ahead with a plan for a unified qualifying exam for solicitors in 2021, even though a comprehensive review of legal training is still underway.
The society said applicants would have to pass a Common Entrance Examination (CEE), set and marked by the society itself, to enter into a trainee solicitor contract in future.
They will have to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL), but passing the exam will no longer be needed and even a fail will be acceptable.
The law school said any relaxation that allows the taking of the CEE without the PCLL could have serious implications on training standards.
