Hundreds of people marched from Chater Garden in Central to the chief executive's residence on Sunday to protest against the appointment of Arthur Li as chairman of the University of Hong Kong's governing body.
They accused CY Leung of ignoring their concerns that Li, an executive councillor, won't defend academic freedom or the institution's autonomy.
The protesters also called for an end to the practice of having the chief executive serve as chancellor of all publicly-funded universities in the territory.
The demonstration’s organisers said some 2,000 people took part. Police put the figure at around 830.
The government rejected the notion that it has interfered with academic freedom. A spokesman said the administration respects people's right to express their views, but those views should be based on fact.
