The chairman of the Living Islands Movement, Merrin Pearce, says only vested interests and pro-government bodies have been consulted about plans for future development on Lantau.

Earlier on Monday, Lau Ping-cheung, a member of the government-appointed Lantau Development Advisory Committee or LANDAC, had played down concerns about the potential environmental impact.

The committee has proposed 14 tourist sites, including a water park, and a Wushu retreat.

Lau said most of Lantau will remain untouched. But speaking on RTHK's News Wrap programme, Pearce said the public often had good ideas about development - and they need to be consulted.

Pearce said when LANDAC had gone to get ideas, it had approached pro-government establishments like the district council, the rural village committees and vested business interests.

He said he wasn’t against development, but a real public consultation was needed as many of the ideas were based on old business models.
