Thousands of people are marching to the Beijing's Liaison Office in Western from government headquarters at Tamar, to protest against the disappearance of five people linked to a Causeway Bay bookstore which sold titles critical of mainland leaders.

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, which organised the rally, said about 6,000 people are taking part. Its secretary, lawmaker Lee Cheuk-yan, said it was up to Hong Kong people to save themselves.

"The people of Hong Kong…we will defend our system…we will defend our freedom. We know we cannot depend on government because this government only knows how to chicken out and do not dare to stand up to the communist party. But the people of Hong Kong will stand up to the communist party to say no, no, no to political kidnap. Defend One Country, Two Systems", shouted Lee to those taking part in the rally.

The five men are believed to have been abducted to the mainland by its security agents.

Civic Party barrister and former legislator, Margaret Ng, who is also taking part in the rally, said the disappearance of the men is a matter the international community should be concerned about.

"If a Hong Kong person in Hong Kong doing what is protected by Hong Kong laws can be snatched from Hong Kong, we have no freedom to speak of. So this is the last straw...we really have to come out and walk", she said.
