Democratic Party lawmaker Sin Chung-kai says the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle is on the verge of collapse.
Speaking on RTHK's 'Letter to Hong Kong', Sin said the whole of Hong Kong was horrified by the mysterious disappearance of five men linked to a bookstore in Causeway Bay, which sold material critical of Beijing.
“It is totally terrifying,” he said. “Mainland officers make arrests in Hong Kong, a clear breach of the Basic Law.”
Sin said Hong Kong people were worried that their lifestyle was being threatened. He then criticised the Chief Executive, CY Leung, saying he hadn’t stood up for Hong Kong and that his rule was a disaster.
Earlier this month, the Chief Executive said that there was no indication that mainland officers had been involved in the disappearances, and that it would be unacceptable for mainland law enforcement personnel to carry out their duties in Hong Kong.
The men went missing between October and December last year. The last to disappear, Lee Bo, was last seen in Chai Wan at the end of December. Three others had earlier disappeared whilst on the mainland. Another, Gui Minhai, disappeared in Thailand.
The US, the EU and the UK have expressed concern about the disappearances. Lee Bo holds a UK passport and Gui Minhai is a Swedish national.
Meanwhile a report has appeared in the Headline Daily that says a video of Lee Bo has emerged.
In it he reportedly says he does not understand why his disappearance has become so high profile. He also reportedly urges people not to take part in a march to protest against the disappearances on Sunday.
