One of the organisers of Friday's protest rally, James Hon, said the appointment of Arthur Li as the chairman of The University of Hong Kong's governing council, as well as the government's reluctance to implement a universal pension scheme will bring more people out onto the streets.
Hon, a spokesman for the 2016 New Year March Alliance, said the police will open up one lane for the march if there are around 1,000 protesters. He said if there are over 3,000 protesters, police may open up one more lane.
Dozens of activist groups are expected to join the rally to protest against what they say are costly infrastructure projects, calling for retirement protection and demanding the resignation of the Chief Executive.
