Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma says the judiciary will remain independent, despite unprecedented challenges "which sometimes assume significant political and social dimensions".
Addressing a ceremony for the admission of new senior counsels, Ma said recent events have shown the polarisation of views within the community on the work of the courts.
Ma did not specify the events, but reiterated that the courts, as well as lawyers, will only try to resolve legal issues by the application of laws and nothing else.
The four barristers taking silk were Anna Lai, Richard Khaw, José-Antonio Maurellet and Alexander Stock.
Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen extended his congratulations to the new silks. He added that Lai will “remain in the legal history of Hong Kong”, as she becomes the city’s first female public prosecutor to be appointed to the rank of senior counsel.
